Obituary

Fern Graff, 89, of Sioux Falls, SD, formerly of Centerville, SD died Sunday, January 13, 2013 at Dougherty Hospice House, Sioux Falls. Fern Florence Wienert Graff was born June 12, 1923 on the family farm near Armour, SD to parents Carl and Amelia (Krause) Wienert. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church, Stickney, SD, a brick country church that her father helped build. Fern attended Rocky Ridge country school near Parkston, SD. At age 65, Fern pursued her lifelong desire to get her high school education. She completed her GED in Beresford which she was quite proud of. Fern moved with her family to Centerville in 1941 where she met and married a local grocer, Wilson. J. Graff, on October 18, 1944. They moved to Sioux Falls where Fern worked at J.C. Penney's and Wilson managed a Red Owl grocery store until returning to Centerville in 1949. They purchased the local Red Owl store, which later became Wilson's Market, owning and operating the business until their retirement in 1986. Fern was an active member of First English Lutheran Church as a Sunday school teacher, Ladies Aid member, and AAL Secretary/Treasurer for 10 years. She was a member of the Model Mrs. Extension Club and a lifelong card player, playing Whist weekly and often nightly into her retirement years. Her first priority was always her family and she was especially proud of her grandchildren. She also had a love for cooking and pie making, always willing to try a new recipe. After Wilson's death in 1992, Fern continued to reside in Centerville until moving to Sioux Falls in 2004 where she was embraced with new friends at Sunnycrest Village, while never forgetting her ties to Centerville. In May, 2012 she moved to Primrose Assisted Living. She is survived by her son, Lyle (Janet) Graff of Sioux Falls; daughter, Jean (Tom) Kenyon of Sioux Falls; four grandchildren, Justin and Jennifer Graff and Lee and Vanessa Kenyon and one brother, Lloyd (Alice) Wienert of Saffner, FL. Preceding her in death were her husband, Wilson, her parents, and three sisters, Irene Neugebauer, Adeline Comp and Evelyn Wieczorek. The family requests memorials to First English Lutheran Church in Centerville. Funeral services for Fern will be 11AM Thursday, Jan. 17th at First English Lutheran Church in Centerville with burial to be held at Woodlawn Cemetery in Sioux Falls.
