Ferdinand "Ferd" ONeil Hybertson passed away at the age of 85 years, 1 month, and 16 days on Monday, March 2, 2020 at his home near Centerville, South Dakota. Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 PM, Friday, March 6, 2020 at Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Centerville, with a prayer service at 7:00 PM. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM, Saturday, March 7 at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, Centerville, SD. Burial will take place at St. John's Catholic Cemetery, Beresford, SD.
Ferd was born at home on the family farm north of Centerville, SD on January 16, 1935 to parents John and Olga (Opland) Hybertson. Ferd attended Greenfield Prairie Center country school, and also Pleasant Grove country school near Centerville, during his grade school years, and then attended and graduated from Centerville High School.
Ferd farmed his whole life, starting with his father as a young boy. During his life on the farm he grew crops, and raised sheep, cattle, and pigs. Ferd did custom farm work for several years. Over the years, he put up thousands of hay and alfalfa square bales, (100 pound, wire tied bales). He was a strong man, and a very hard worker. Ferd was a sheep shearer, and could shear 100 sheep in a day. When the kids were old enough, he would have the boys help catch the sheep to shear, and then the girls would be lowered into the 8-foot tall burlap wool sacks to pack the wool. Ferd was well known for moving any type of building. He moved houses, barns, grain bins, quonsets, 150 foot buildings, and even a train depot for 250 miles all with the help of his wife and children. In time, his son, Richard and grandson, Nicholas joined Ferd in the farming and house moving business, Hybertson Moving.
He was united in marriage to Barbara Evelyn Leifgen at St. Teresa's Catholic Church in Beresford, SD on January 16, 1954. They made their home on the farm north of Centerville. They had five children. Ferd was dedicated to family. He was an avid supporter of 4-H. He enjoyed attending the Turner County and State Fairs, where he watched and helped his children show sheep. He was very proud of his family and their accomplishments, and he enjoyed attending the grandchildren and great-grandchildren's football, basketball, volleyball, and softball/baseball games, and all the pageants, dance/cheer competitions, and band performances.
Ferd is survived by his wife of 66 years, Barbara E. Hybertson; sons, James (Carla) of Viborg, Richard (Bonnie) of Beresford, and Thomas (Karla) of Sioux Falls; daughters, Sharon (Bob) Hustrulid of Beresford, and Sandra Hybertson of Harrisburg; ten grandchildren, Jared (Christe) Hybertson, Jordon Hybertson, Alyssa (Paxton) Folkerts, Preston Hustrulid, Lindsey Hybertson, Nicholas Hybertson, Patrick Hybertson, Michael Hybertson, Sydney Hybertson, and Kayleigh Hybertson; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and five brothers Delmer, Harris, Verlyn, Roswell, and Dean.
