Evelyn Darlene (Henning) Smith was born October 13, 1926 in Wolsey, SD to parents William and Molly (Flynn) Henning. She died December 9, 2006 at the Good Samaritan Center in Centerville, SD at the age of 80 years, 1 month and 26 days. Evelyn and her family moved to her life long home of Centerville, SD. After graduating from high school in 1945, Evelyn, known as Sissy to family, worked as a telephone operator and began a piano teaching career spanning over 50 years and hundreds of students. Evelyn married the boy next door, Leo D. (Pat) Smith on a very snowy November 15, 1947. While they had no children, they raised several ornery dogs and counted nieces, nephew, and her students as their own. Their quiet generosity made life better for many in their church and community. Sissy was the organist in the Catholic Church for more years than anyone can remember. Evelyn is survived by sisters-in-law Beverly Henning, Sioux Falls, and Mickey Halstead, Centerville; nieces Linda Kramer, Hill City; Patricia and Jeffrey Peters, Sioux Falls, Sue and Randy Mitchell, Tucson, AZ, and Jean and Roger Peterson, Centerville; nephew Jimmy and Diana Halstead, El Paso, TX; special friend Mary Nelson Ferwerda; and a host of relatives, friends and former piano students. She was preceded in death by her husband Pat in November of 2003, parents, and brother, Wallace. Memorials may be directed to the Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Centerville.
