Obituary

Elwood Herman Gylfe was born March 11, 1924 to Gustav Herman and Mabel (Shogren) Gylfe on a farm west of Beresford in Clay County SD. He passed away peacefully August 22, 2015 surrounded by his family. Elwood was the middle of three children. His parents both spoke fluent Swedish and as a small child picked up much of the Swedish language and traditions. He received his education in Danefield Country School (with 1 year in Emmett) and graduated from Beresford High School in 1941. He married Shirley Darlene Thoms (of LeMars, IA) May 31, 1959. They made their home west of Beresford. They were blessed to be able to raise their children on the same farm where Elwood was born, living just few hundred yards away from his parents. Later in his life he moved back to the same house where he was born and spent the rest of his days there. Elwood was a farmer his entire life. He loved the land and cared for all of God's creatures, from livestock to numerous pets. He continued to check the fields and cattle even in his final years using a golf cart and wheelchair. Elwood had a quick smile and positive attitude for everyone. Babies and young children held a special place in his heart and always had room on his lap. He was a kind and gentle soul with a great sense of humor and quick wit. He took great pride in teaching his children and grandchildren numerous Scandinavian traditions from his heritage.
