Eleanor Jean Johnson was born in Casper, WY, on December 11, 1924 to parents Frank and Marie (Shepphard) Johnson. She died August 28, 2018 at the Alcester Care & Rehab Center at the age of 93 years, eight months and 17 days.
Eleanor was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith and years later baptized as an adult. Currently she has attended Set Free Church in Beresford, SD.
Eleanor graduated from high school in Ellsworth, WI. She attended the University of Wisconsin (Madison) for 1 ½ years, then attended and graduated from the Lutheran Bible Institute in Minneapolis, MN. She graduated from the St. Cloud, MN, Teachers College with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1948. Eleanor attended and earned her Diploma Superior in French at the Alliance Francaise, Paris, in 1950. While on a missionary furlough, Eleanor graduated with a Master of Arts from New York University in 1957.
She sensed the call into mission work thinking she would go to China, then missionaries began returning from that field. In 1949 she received the letter of missionary call to Madagascar where she ministered until 1973, resigning due to health reasons. Eleanor worked in Fort Dauphin, Ombibambe, and Manafiafy with various age groups from primary, adolescent girls, and adults.
Upon returning to the United States and recuperating from successful surgery, she worked at the Lutheran Manor in Sioux Falls, taught in the Beresford School System at the Brule rural school, then in the White River Schools for 13 years. While in White River, Eleanor was led to become a foster mother and cared for 8 to 10 children through those years. Still today she is family to Jackie and Lance and their children. She and they lost their brother Danny in a car accident some years ago.
Upon retirement from teaching Eleanor moved to Beresford where she volunteered at the Senior Center, Civic Council, Compassionate Care, and taught Bible. Eleanor enjoyed exercising, putting together puzzles, and playing cards. Most of all, Eleanor knew Jesus as her Lord and Savior through His living word, the Bible and, through the years, prayed for many to know the Lord.
Eleanor appreciated loving care from the Alcester Care and Rehab Center and Compassionate Care Hospice.
She is survived by two foster children,
Jackie (White Feather) Blalock from Skiatook, OK and her family and Lancer White Feather from Mission, SD and his family; her cousins, Helen Danielson, Jim Johnson and Suzie Lentz; several nieces and nephews, friends and distant cousins.
Preceding her in death were her parents, two sisters, Marion and Francis and a foster child, Danny White Feather.
A Celebration of Life service for Eleanor will be held at 7PM Friday, September 7, 2018 at Set Free Church in Beresford, SD.
