Eleanor M. Anderson, 88, passed away as the result of a heart attack on April 13, 2006 at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls. Eleanor M. Anderson, seventh child of Mathias and Mary Thompson was born June 12, 1917 on the family farm southeast of Alcester. She attended Finn Rural School, Alcester High School, and, after one year at Southern State Teachers College, began to teach at rural schools near Alcester. Eleanor continued to take evening and summer classes and earned her Bachelors of Science degree in Elementary Education in 1968 from USD/Springfield. She continued her teaching career by teaching second grade in Alcester Public Schools for 21 years. Eleanor married Donald W. Anderson, when he returned from four years in the US Army, on July 2, 1946. She is survived by her husband, Donald; their son, Douglas and his wife, Janice of Fort Collins, Colorado; three grandchildren, Matthew of Austin, Texas, Katie (Brian Hodgson) Anderson of Winona, Wisconsin and Christopher of Fort Collins. Preceding her in death were her parents, three brothers and four sisters. Eleanor was a lifelong member of Nathanael Lutheran Church, where she taught many years of Sunday school and served on many church and WELCA committees. She was a member of RLD reading/study club, ADK teachers sorority, BCNU club, VFW Auxiliary, RSVP and Prime Visions. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, April 17, 2006 at Nathanael Lutheran Church in Alcester with burial at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Alcester. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. on Sunday, April 16, at Wass Funeral Home in Alcester.
