Eldean H. Wevik was born on February 16, 1931 in rural Beresford, South Dakota to Newton and Viola (Sommervold) Wevik. He passed away on June 21, 2026 at his home in Beresford surrounded by his loving family at the age of 95 years.
Eldean was raised on the family farm and attended Brule Grade School. He graduated from Alcester High School in 1949. After graduation he did carpentry work with his uncle Bob Stoen and helped on the family farm. He enlisted in the US Air Force in 1951 and was stationed at Walker AFB in Roswell, NM as a ground crew member on a KB29. He and his crew were also deployed to Kwajalein Island and Guam in the Pacific during the Korean War.
Following his honorable discharge in 1954, he returned home and on May 4, 1954 married Eleanor Larson at Trinity Lutheran Church, Lincoln County, SD. The couple raised their four children; Brenda, Doug, Debra and Scott on the family farm that Eldean operated until 1992. At that time, he retired but continued helping on the farm. He enjoyed using his carpentry skills in remodeling homes where he and Eleanor lived. (Or the homes where any of his kids lived.)
Eldean and Eleanor enjoyed traveling, visiting all 50 states and several countries overseas, including Spain, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Australia and New Zealand. While in Norway he visited the Wevik family farm where his paternal grandfather Erick lived as a child and also the Sommervold family farm.
Eldean was baptized and confirmed at Roseni Lutheran Church, where he was a lifelong member. He served many positions on the church council including president, treasurer, deacon and trustee. He also served as president of the Roseni Cemetery Association. He was involved in many projects at Roseni including remodeling the kitchen and installing an elevator. Eldean and Eleanor went on three mission trips including to Timber Lake and Belle Fourche, SD and also to Alaska.
Community involvement included membership in the American Legion, VFW, and Lions Club. He was active in the Union County Pork Producers and served on the Hillswood School Board.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Newton and Viola Wevik; and his sister and brother-in-law Beverly and Clinton Wetrosky.
Grateful for sharing his life is his wife of 72 years, Eleanor; children, Brenda (Vern) Christopherson, Doug (Chris) Wevik, Debra (Brian) Holter, and Scott (Heidi) Wevik; 11 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and many relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be 10 AM Tuesday, June 30, 2026 at Roseni Lutheran Church, 47214 307th St, Beresford, SD with committal prayers and military honors to follow in the church cemetery.
