Duane J. Johnson was born July 28, 1919 in Alcester, SD to Joseph and Julia (Swanson) Johnson. He died July 31, 2013 in Sioux Falls at the age of 94 years and three days. He was raised in the Alcester area and attended Alcester schools. Duane worked at a grocery store until he joined the US Army where he served in the Pacific Theatre during WWII. Following his honorable discharge he worked and lived in California. Duane had farming in his blood so he returned to his roots in South Dakota. He farmed in southeastern SD and then near Clear Lake, SD where he farmed and raised cattle. His wife, Loreen (Miller) Johnson died in 1975. Duane married Deloris Peterson in 1978 and together they moved to Arkansas where they lived for 14 years. In 1994 they returned to live in Beresford. Duane was a very gifted baseball player in his youth. He was a member of the VFW, he liked to hunt and fish and was an avid reader. He is survived by his wife, Deloris Johnson of Beresford; step-daughter, Sandi Doss of Sioux Falls; step-granddaughter, Jordan Doss; brother, Harlan Johnson of Lavaca, AR; sister-in-law, Vivian Johnson of Beresford and many nieces and nephews. His parents, first wife Loreen, infant son, brother, Ernest Johnson and two sisters, Elma Swanson and Ruby Anderson, preceded him in death. Graveside services with military honors will be 10AM Monday, August 5, 2013 at Rockfield Cemetery, rural Beresford, SD.
