Duane Henry Harmon was born March 10, 1932 in rural Centerville, SD to Bert and Augusta (Peterson) Harmon. He passed away Wednesday, April 13, 2011 at the Centerville Good Samaritan Center after an eight year battle with cancer at the age of 79 years, one month and three days. He attended rural grade school and Centerville High School. Duane farmed in Murdo, SD for a short time before being drafted into the US Army in 1952, where he proudly served for two years at Madigan Army Hospital in Fort Lewis, WA. He returned home and worked for Bartlett Grain Co. until 1960. Duane and his brother, Jim, started Harmon Sand and Gravel and continued until 1983. He worked for the City of Centerville for 15 years, retiring in 1997. To keep busy in retirement, Duane worked as a janitor for Fort Randall Telephone Co. Duane married Genevieve Brue on June 18, 1977. He was a member of the American Legion and served on the Riverview Cemetery Board. He was a voluntary firefighter for 18 years and sponsored a bowling team for many years. Duane enjoyed hunting, camping and bowling in past years and spending time with his grandchildren. He loved family reunions so he could stay in touch with his extended family. Each new baby in the family was a joy to him. He is survived by his wife, Genevieve; three step-children, Scott (Jasele) Brue of Lennox, SD, Dawn (Darwin) Plucker of Lennox, SD and Dean (Gretchen) Brue of Centerville; 10 step-grandchildren; one sister, Eva (Joe) Erickson of Centerville; and two brothers, Jim (Bonnie) Harmon of Centerville and Tom (Linda) Harmon of Overland Park, KS. His parents, two brothers and three sisters preceded him in death. Funeral services will be 2PM Monday, April 18, 2011 at Centerville United Church of Christ. Visitation will be 3-8PM Sunday at Wass Funeral Home in Centerville with the family present from 7-8PM and a prayer service at 7:30PM.
