Mass of Christian burial for Doug will be at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 28, 2007 at St. Teresa Catholic Church in Beresford, SD. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 2:00-5:00 p.m. at Wass Funeral Home in Alcester and continuing from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the church in Beresford with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. Doug Thompson was born July 4, 1945 in Beresford, South Dakota to Henry and LaVerne (Naeve) Thompson. He died Saturday, March 24, 2007 in Alcester, SD at his home surrounded by his family at the age of 61 years, eight months and 20 days. Doug was raised in the Beresford area and attended pleasant Valley school and Beresford High School. He graduated from high school in Mt. Vernon, WA prior to enlisting in the US Marine Corps in 1963. Doug was a mechanic specialist and spent 13 months in Vietnam. Following his discharge in 1967, Doug was accepted to Berkley College in California. After he met Gloria he declined attending and returned to South Dakota. Doug married Gloria Johnson May 28, 1969 at St. Teresa Catholic Church in Beresford. Doug was the owner of Alcester Meats, a pork processing plant, from 1973 until he sold the business in March of 2003. He then worked in Hawarden, Iowa preparing pork hides for export until October 23, 2006. He was diagnosed with cancer October 24, 2006. Doug was a member of the Knights of Columbus, VFW honor guard and American Legion. He is a past member of the Lions International and the Commercial Club. Doug is survived by his wife, Gloria Thompson; three daughters, Lisa Gordon and her husband, Troy of Sioux Falls, Sara Thompson of Alcester and Rita Thompson and special friend, Brett Spurgeon of Virginia Beach, VA; two granddaughters, Madysen Thompson and Tionna Gordon; three brothers, Dennis (Marlys) Thompson of El Paso, TX, Dallas (Linda) Thompson of Alcester and Dale (Elizabeth) Thompson of Alcester and four sisters, JoAnn (Art) Taylor of Seattle, WA, Janis (Mike) Gordon of Windom, MN, Judy Steinfadt of Portland, OR and Joelle (Mike) Reynolds of Normandy Park, WA. Three sisters-in-law, Virginia (Myron) Waterman of Amarillo, TX, Mary Kay (Ray) Dimmick of Mitchell, SD and Judy (Merle) Westover of Hawarden, IA also survive Doug. His parents; one brother, Dean Thompson; one infant sister, June Thompson; one infant son, Benjamin Thompson; one brother-in-law, Curt Baarley and one great-niece, Shayla Niemeier preceded him in death.
