Obituary

Douglas Dean Nygaard, 73, of Beresford, SD died May 9 at Helen Ellis Memorial Hospital in Tarpon Springs, FL. Doug was born April 14, 1933 in Ihlen, MN to Jacob and Sarah (Sabie) Nygaard. The family moved to Beresford in 1935. Doug received his education in Beresford. He served in the US Army 24th Infantry Division as a Sergeant in Korea. Doug worked with the US Postal Service from 1957, serving as Postmaster-in-charge at Wagner, Dell Rapids, and Aberdeen and Postmaster in Montrose and Beresford, retiring in 1989. Doug was past Post Commander of Beresford VFW Post 2975 and Beresford Legion Post 72 and was a life member of both organizations. He was state Vice Commander of the South Dakota American Legion, the District Legionnaire of the Year in 1971 and a member of the Sioux Falls 40 + 8. In 1957 Doug organized the VFW Teener baseball program in Beresford and managed the program for 13 years and served 10 years as a state Teener Baseball Commissioner. He also served as President of the American Postal Union in Sioux Falls. He was preceded in death by his parents, and siblings, Laurel, Robert, Bernard, Jeanette Peternell and Beulah Boynton. Doug will be missed and is survived by his wife of 53 years Carol Nygaard of Beresford; son Douglas Nygaard II and wife Carol Ann of Beresford; grandchildren Shannon Carlson, Joshua, Jonathon, and Megan Nygaard, and great grandchildren Kaydence and Olivia; three brothers: Joe Nygaard and wife Mary of California, Norman Nygaard and wife Gloria of Beresford and Everett Nygaard and wife Joan of Beresford; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Services will be 2PM, Tuesday, May 16 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Beresford. Visitation with family present will be Monday from 6PM to 8PM at Wass Funeral Home in Beresford.
