Dorothy (Weiland) Sassel was born October 19, 1920 in rural Beresford, South Dakota to Anthony and Mary (Reinartz) Weiland. She went to be with the Lord Tuesday, April 24, 2012 at Bethesda of Beresford at the age of 91. Dorothy was raised in rural Beresford attending Cleveland Country School and graduating from Beresford High School. She was united in marriage to the love of her life, Nick Sassel, September 9, 1941 at St. Joseph Catholic Church Emmett. They farmed for 43 years and raised their family before retiring and moving into Beresford. Dorothy and Nick were always seen together, as they loved each other's company, and they liked to travel in their retirement. Dorothy's generous heart lead her to give so much of her time to family, church, friends and neighbors. Baking cinnamon rolls and coconut cream pies are just a few of the memories her family and friends will cherish forever. She was a member of the church choir for many years and the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, leading the Rosary at Bethesda and volunteering as a sacristan. Her greatest joy was her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, always looking forward to the next family gathering or celebration. She is survived by her husband of 70 years, Nick Sassel; two daughters, Diane (Clark) Wells of Alcester and Marilyn (Herb) Dreeszen of Sioux Falls; four grandsons, Todd (Jessica) Wells of Sioux Falls, Chad (Ginger) Wells of Canistota, Bryan (Beth) Wells of Sioux City, IA, and Brent (Heidi) Dreeszen of Aurora, SD; one granddaughter, Lisa (Jim) Dougherty of Sioux Falls; 18 great-grandchildren, Ariahna and Aiden Wells of Sioux Falls, Collin, Tyler, Ashley and Lauren Wells of Canistota, Elivia, Nicholas, Elise, Lincoln and Noah Wells of Sioux City, Nathan, Seth, Emily and Hannah Dreeszen of Aurora and James, Joshua and Amanda Dougherty of Sioux Falls. Her parents and brother, Donald Weiland preceded her in death. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10AM Friday, April 27, 2012 at St. Teresa Catholic Church in Beresford. Visitation will be 4-8PM Thursday at the church with the family present from 5-7PM and a rosary and prayer service at 7PM. His Garden God looked around His garden and found an empty place. He then looked down upon the earth, And saw your tired face. He put His arms around you and lifted you to rest. God's Garden must be beautiful He always takes the best. He knew that you wee suffering, He knew you were in pain He knew that you would never Get well on earth again. He saw the road was getting rough, And the hills were hard to climb. So He closed your weary eyelids, And whispered "Peace be thine." It broke our hearts to lose you But you didn't go alone. For part of us went with you The day God called you home.
