Dorothy E. Johnson was born April 6, 1915 in Union County, SD to parents Martin and Beda (Olssan) Johnson. She entered into eternity on January 11, 2011 at Morningside Care Center in Alcester, SD at the age of 95 years, 8 months and 25 days.
Dorothy attended West Union rural school near Union Creek. She married Robert E. Johnson on April 6, 1932 in her parents home near Akron, IA. The couple farmed in the Big Springs area until semi-retirement in 1977 when they moved into Alcester. Dorothy not only helped out as a farm wife, but helped run the Big Springs Store, worked at the Akron Hospital and Nursing Home, cleaned the REA building with Bob, and worked at Morningside Manor as a cook and in the laundry.
Dorothy was a member of Big Springs Baptist Church where she served the Lord through cleaning and being a part of the Womens serving groups. She was well known for her rice pudding and scalloped potatoes at pot luck dinners.
Among those who survive and gratefully shared her life are her son Larry L. Johnson of Alcester; her grandchildren, Loren Johnson and wife Pam of Rochester, MN and Lori Johnson and husband Lee of Sioux Falls; grandson-in-law Curtis Jensen of Greely, IA; 10 great grandchildren, Sheryl (Brent) Konz, Abigail Swanson, Beda Johnson, Luke (Stacey) Johnson, Lonnie Johnson, Lynise Johnson, Elizabeth (Dirk) Myhr, Charlotte Jensen, Nicholas Jensen and Christopher Jensen; 5 great, great grandchildren, Bailey Swanson, Gavin and Mason Konz, Ella Johnson and Aaden Myhr; a sister-in-law Berniece Johnson of Sioux Falls; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, 2 brothers, sister, daughter-in-law, granddaughter, great grandson, 4 great grandchildren in infancy, and a great, great grandson.
The Johnson family would to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Morningside Care Center and Compassionate Care Hospice for the wonderful care and friendship they provided for Dorothy.
May her love, kindness and faithfulness to Christ be a reminder to us in our daily lives.
Funeral services will be held 11:00AM, Saturday, January 15, 2011 at Big Springs Baptist Church, rural Alcester, with burial to follow at the church cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church.
