Obituary

Dorothea N. "Dottie" Dailey died June 20, 2020 at the Centerville Care & Rehab Center surrounded by her family at the age of 98 years, six months and six days. She was born December 14, 1921 in Chicago, IL to Kenneth and Ellen (Siebert) Hoyne. She lived with her family in Kadoka, SD until moving to Centerville, SD when she was six years old.  She graduated from Centerville High School and worked as a switchboard operator at the Centerville Telephone Company until 1948.

Dottie married Merle Dailey in Centerville on November 23, 1946 and the couple moved to a farm in Davis, SD. She kept a busy schedule being an active member of the Davis Doers, Eastern Star, Red Hat Society, and the American Legion Auxiliary. Dottie was the church organist for 63 years and choir director at the First Baptist Church of Centerville. She collected clowns and made 183 clowns of one pattern and has a Campbell Soup Collection. Dottie has been sewing and doing crafts for over 80 years.

Following Merle's death in 1997 Dottie moved to be near each of her children. She has lived in Pierre, SD, Viborg, SD and Council Bluffs, IA. Dottie sang with a barbershop chorus in Pierre and other chorus' wherever she has lived. An important life accomplishment for Dottie was helping with the Cancer Luncheon in Pierre, SD; she created two table settings a year for 20 years. Dottie also loved to donate baby hats she crocheted for newborns.

Governor Janklow proclaimed November 23, 1946 as Merle and Dorothea Dailey Day to recognize and commemorate their 50 th anniversary as a milestone in the lives of the state's outstanding citizens.

She is survived by her daughter, Teresa (Ron) Nygaard of Viborg, SD; son, Paul (Laura) Dailey of Council Bluffs, IA; 14 grandchildren, Raylene, Missy, Kristen, Krysta, Whitney, Jennifer, Allie, Stacy, Samantha, Richard, Michael, Kayla, Mathew and Laney; 11 great-grandchildren, Ashley, Amber, Deven, Cullen, Gracie, Chloe, Jake, Devin, Abigail, Madison and Sawyer; and three great-great-grandchildren, Gage, Hunter and Brooks. Dottie was preceded in death by her husband, Merle Dailey; daughter, Nanette Dailey; grandson, Daniel; brother, Kenneth and sister, Maridell.

Graveside services will be 3:00PM Thursday, June 24, 2020 at Riverview Cemetery in Centerville, SD. Visitation will be 1-2:45PM Thursday at Wass Funeral Home in Centerville.
