Doris Victoria Clay, died Friday, July 1, 2022 at Centerville Care & Rehab, at the age of 95 years. Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00PM, Tuesday, July 5 in Fellowship Hall of Beresford United Church of Christ with a prayer service beginning at 6:30PM. Funeral services will be held at 11:00AM, Wednesday, July 6 at the Beresford UCC. Memorials may be given to Pioneer Pleasant Hill Cemetery, rural Lincoln County, or to a charity of your choice.
Doris Victoria Clay was born September 30, 1926 north of Beresford to August and Frieda Kram. She attended Rainy Vale grade school. Doris learned the importance of hard work at an early age when her farmer father became ill. She graduated from Beresford High School in the class of 1944. She married Harold Clay on June 11, 1944 and they began their life together farming north of Beresford. Doris enjoyed the years of school activities with son, Darrel, daughter Sharon and son Duane. Son, David was born in 1960 and sadly, lived only 11 days. She kept busy selling eggs to several businesses in the area communities. She especially enjoyed working with the baby lambs. Harold and Doris enjoyed farming and built a successful farm life. She was involved in Pioneer School and Lincoln County community. She was a member of Beresford UCC church and Women's Fellowship and the Pioneer Ladies Aid.
In 1984, Harold and Doris moved into Beresford, Darrel and Duane continued the farming operation. Duane moved to the home farm. Doris then had the opportunity to become a member of the Red Hat Society and GFWC. She enjoyed the friendships and activities that came with both. Her Church and Women's Fellowship remained important to her. Harold and Doris celebrated 66 years of marriage. Harold passed away in 2011 and she continued to live in Beresford until she moved to Centerville Care Center in 2016. She took part in all the activities offered at the care center, and especially enjoyed winning Bingo games.
Doris is survived by daughter, Sharon (Jim) Miller of Mandan, ND; son, Duane (Marlys) Clay, and daughter-in-law, Joyce Clay, all of Beresford; nine grandchildren: Brian (Tonya) Miller of Sioux Falls, Kevin (Melissa) Miller of Sioux Falls, Nathan (Cassie) Miller of Mandan, ND, Crystal Clay of Beresford, Dr. Kyla (Daniel) Knutson of Centerville, Stacey (Randy) Namminga of Beresford, Stephanie (Ryan) James of Pickerington, OH, Lindsay (Shane) Zylstra of Beresford and Ryan (Amy) Clay of Sioux Falls; 21 great-grandchildren and 4+ great-great granddaughters.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her son Darrel, her infant son David, her parents and her sisters, Violet Wehde and Alice Kram.
