Obituary

Donna Marie Truman was born August 26, 1927 on a farm near Hayti, SD to parents Robert and Evelyn (Flavin) Sour.  She  passed away at the Avera Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls, SD. on October 25, 2008.  She had attained the age of  eighty-one years, one month, and  twenty-nine days.

Donna received her primary education at Hayti Elementary and at Dixon #4 rural school.  She attended Hayti high school her freshman and sophomore years, then moved into Bryant where she completed her high school education, graduating in 1945. Following graduation she moved to California where she lived with her grandparents.       On June 15, 1947 she married Elwood 'Woody' Truman at Long Beach, CA.  The couple made their home at the Naval station in Alameda while Elwood served in the Navy.  During this time Donna worked as a secretary at the Naval base. While working at the base Donna was honored by being selected to represent that Naval branch as a candidate for queen in the Tournament of Roses ceremony and parade.

Following her husband's discharge from the Navy the couple moved to Fort Collins, CO. and Brookings, SD.  During this time Donna worked in the admission and finance offices at South Dakota State University as a clerk and secretary.  The couple then made their home in Correctionville and Spirit Lake, IA.  In 1958 Donna and her family moved to Beresford, SD where she resided until the time of her death.

Donna was baptized and confirmed in the United Church of Christ.   She served as a Sunday school and Bible school teacher, as well as being actively involved in the Women's Fellowship group. She remained an active member of the UCC church in Beresford until her health no longer allowed her to participate.

Donna worked at various businesses in Beresford including Dorothy's Apparel, Zachary's Manufacturing, Sioux Steam Cleaner Corp. and Marty's Cafe. In 1994 she retired due to poor health. From 1989 until the present time Donna made her home with her daughter and son-in-law, Debra and Larry Muller.

The most important part of Donna's life was always caring for her children, and in her later years, her grandchildren.   When her children were young she was always involved in all their activities, whether serving as a den mother for scouts or being active in the PTA.  She loved to cook for her family and enjoyed sewing and crocheting. Many people were recipients of her beautiful afghans. She enjoyed gardening and canned many fruits and vegetables during the summer months.  Always a nature lover, Donna took great pleasure watching and feeding the birds in her yard. She was an avid fan of   sports, and liked to watch  football, basketball and baseball games on television, including many golf tournaments. When her sons were still at home she relished road hunting for pheasants with them during the hunting season.

Among the survivors who will cherish her memory are her four children and their spouses, Robert Truman and his wife Ranae  of Rapid City, SD.,  Debra Muller and her husband Larry  of Beresford,  James Truman and his wife Debra  of Beresford, and William Truman and his wife Susan  of Harrisburg, SD; eleven grandchildren, Bradley Muller  (Noelle) of Beresford, Jillianne Danahay  (Michael ) of Omaha, NE., Lucas Muller (Amber) of Madison, SD,  Nicole Keller  (Josh) of Watertown, SD, Ashley Truman of Watertown, SD,  Emily Truman of Baton Rouge, LA., Sarah Truman of Harrisburg, Jared Truman of Beresford, Talena Truman of Sioux Falls SD., Brock Gamble   (Jennifer) of Omaha, NE., and Bret Gamble of Sioux Falls;  six great-grandchildren, Alexandra, Jaden and Maiya Muller, Austin Danahay, Joshua Keller, and Jacob and Sophia Gamble.
