Funeral services for Donald R. Anderson, 78, of Alcester, SD will be at 10AM Friday, April 9, 2010 at Alcester United Church of Christ. Visitation will be Thursday from 2-8PM at Wass Funeral Home in Alcester with the family present from 6-8PM.
Don was born October 5, 1931 in Beresford, SD to W. Ray and Ruth (Stoen) Anderson. He died April 1, 2010 in Sioux Falls, SD at the age of 78 years, five months and 26 days.
Don was raised south of Beresford and attended Brule country school and Beresford High School. He volunteered for the draft during the Korean War and entered the US Army Feb. 19, 1952. Don spent 18 months in Europe and was honorably discharged Jan. 26, 1954. He returned to South Dakota where he worked as a farm hand and also as a carpenter. In July of 1967, Don married Myrna Parsons, and they moved to Cincinnati, OH where he managed apartments. They returned to Alcester and operated a caf before Don began driving truck. He drove coast-to-coast and later had local routes. Myrna died in August of 2001.
He was a life member of the Beresford VFW and loved visiting and having coffee with friends. He enjoyed working with the Hudson and Alcester nursing homes driving residents to appointments.
Don is survived by his brother, Merlyn (Barbara) Anderson of Cincinnati, OH; sister, Grace Beck of Hawarden, IA; and many nieces, nephews and friends. His parents; wife; step-son, Dan Parsons; brother, Dale Anderson; and sister, Jean Kelley preceded him in death.
