Donald Louis Mark was born August 3, 1924 to Gould and Hannah (Larson) Mark in Viborg, SD and joined the Lord on May 26, 2018 at the Centerville Care & Rehab nursing home. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM, Thursday, May 31, 2018 at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Viborg, SD. Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 PM Wednesday, May 30 at the church, followed by a prayer service at 7:00 PM.
Donald attended country school at Viborg Country School and graduated from Viborg High School in 1942. Deciding he wanted to see the world, Donald joined the US Navy in 1944. During World War II, he served as gunner's mate on the troop transport ship USS President Polk. He was discharged in 1946 and returned to Viborg to farm.
Donald married Maridell Hoyne on September 26, 1948. Together, they raised seven children. Donald enjoyed working with livestock, raising purebred Duroc hogs and Simmental cattle. He served as treasurer of the National Duroc Association. He enjoyed going to hog and cattle shows and taking his family to the Duroc Association summer picnics.
Family was important to Donald. He loved spending time with his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and his pug, Toni. Known for his sweet tooth, Donald always had room for dessert – especially if it was ice cream, chocolate or sour cream raisin pie.
He was preceded in death by his wife; their daughter, Cheryl; his parents; an infant sibling; sisters Geraldine Dangel and Marilyn Rhymer; and his brother Robert Mark.
Donald is survived by his children, Marsha Peterson of Sioux Falls, Greg (Kathy) Mark of Sioux Falls, Susan (John) Carlson of Rapid City, Jeff (Anita) Mark of Viborg, Mary (Tom) Karnik of Huntersville, NC, Jim (Mercedes) Mark of O'Fallon, Il; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-granddaughter; and a brother, Charles (Martha) Mark of Yankton.
