Donald William Hughes died August 5, 2012 at Bethesda Home in Beresford, SD. Don, 85, was born in Ireton, IA on January 13, 1927, the first of nine children. Don grew up in Ireton and worked various jobs as a youth before entering military service. He was a veteran of both WWII and the Korean War. Don was united in marriage to Joyce Reinders from which four children were born. Don was later united in marriage to Doris Larson Jamtgaard on October 19, 1987 and lived in Alcester, SD. In October of 2009 Don moved to Bethesda where he lived until his death. Throughout his life Don loved to fish and fly model airplanes. His expertise in modeling, from radio controls to rebuilding those that crashed were among the many challenges he enjoyed. Many of his creations, and those of his flying buddies, brought forth objects with wings and props that really didn't look like airplanes but they flew them nevertheless. Being interested in music he was self taught in guitar, piano, harmonica and other instruments, each with his own creative and personal flair. Don and Doris enjoyed many weekends traveling together traveling to area dances, meeting and making friends. They were owners of Don's Piano Tuning, serving many area schools and a wide area of private residents until his retirement. Don was a member of Beresford Area Radio Flyers (BARF) and Veteran's of Foreign Wars (VFW). Don is survived by his wife, Doris of Alcester; sons, Kevin and David Hughes; daughter-in-law, Charlena and his grandson Alex (Angela) Hughes of Minneapolis, MN; sisters, Helen Schneider of Oelwein, IA, Peggy Wierda and Pauline Schaller both of Mesa, AZ, Nancy Jordan of Farmington, MN, Myrna (Marlin) Westra and Sally (Lowell) Calkins all of Sioux Falls; brothers, Jon (Donna) Hughes of Winner, SD and Mike Hughes of Sioux Falls. His parents, Albert and Viola (Miller) Hughes; and two sons, Alex and Loren preceded him in death. Memorial services will be 2PM Thursday, August 9, 2012 at Wass Funeral Home in Alcester, SD. Burial with military honors will follow at Nora Cemetery, rural Nora, SD.
