Diane Leona Otten, 63, of Spink, SD, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on August 2, 2014 at Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD, after being diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig disease). Her strength, courage and concern for those she would leave behind inspired us all through her final days. Diane was born July 7, 1951 in Akron, IA to parents Glen and Bernadine (Gessert) Hughes. A loving wife, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, Diane was known to be a great cook and hard worker. She put both of these things to use when along with her husband John, they purchased and re-established the Spink Café as a favorite gathering place for the community that she so loved. Left behind to cherish her memory are her husband, John Otten, Jr., Spink, SD; her children and grandchildren, Wanda Yager and Dillon, Desiree, Devin and Dasia of Madison, SD, Will Otten and Ron Dowse of Knoxville, TN and Sam and Rhonda Otten, Skylar, Kainan and Ashton of Spink, SD; her siblings, Kate Renken, Aldine (Richard)Meinen, Mary (Larry) Tucker, Connie Boettger (Don Thoms), Glenda (Dennis) Dunaway, Patricia (Mike) Toben, Alfred (Hank) Hughes and James (Julia) Hughes; and many beloved nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, mother and father-in-law, and four brothers, Ronald, Richard, Samuel and William. A celebration of Diane's life was held Sunday, August 3 at the Spink Café.
