Dennis Wayne ”DJ” Johnson passed on March 13, 2026.

Dennis was born in Sioux Falls, SD on Dec. 14, 1944 and graduated from Beresford High School. He worked tirelessly at the South Dakota Geological Survey from age 19 all the way up until his retirement.

In his town, Dennis was a prominent contributing member of the Beresford Area Radio Flyers, and served as their secretary. He was a writer at heart. Dennis helped with producing BARF’s newsletters, which were written with a keen attention to detail. He loved the people of his town. A more than frequent library attendant, Beresford librarians described him as kind and quiet, but talkative in the same breath.

Not only was Dennis a dedicated and helpful member in his community, but in his family as well. He was the “cool uncle”. He was kind enough to bestow his musical knowledge and taste, genealogical research and wise, comical storytelling to his nieces and nephews.

Dennis loved planes. His brother-in-law, Paul Wheeldon, gifted him his first model airplane in his childhood. He enjoyed his trips to Oshkosh, car shows and other adventures with friends.

He was a strong advocate for documentation. Dennis kept track of the Johnson/Cue family lineage, all the way back to our arrival in America. If you had a question about our family, rest assured he would email back promptly — always signing off his letters with an unmistakable signature: “djdjdjdjdjdj”.

Dennis was preceded in death by his parents, William and Mabel (Cue) Johnson; sister, Doris Wheeldon; and two brothers, Charles Johnson and Stanley Johnson.

He is survived by several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral services will be 2PM Saturday, March 21, 2026 at Wass Funeral Home, 301 N 3rd Street, Beresford, SD.
