Delmer John Olson was born on August 10, 1923 on the family farm in Clay County, South Dakota to John and Selma (Nelson) Olson. He died September 28, 2020 at Bethesda in Beresford, SD at the age of 97 years.
Delmer was raised on the farm with two brothers and attended Ash Creek Country School. He married Ferne Knudson on September 1, 1949. Together they raised their family as Delmer continued to farm. Delmer was a member of the Scandia Lutheran Church in Centerville. He retired from his life of working on the farm he loved at age 70 but continued to help his son until the age of 80.
Delmer enjoyed reading westerns, historical books, and his bible. Delmer was a good carpenter and a meticulous woodworker, gifting many projects to family members. Together, Delmer and Ferne enjoyed traveling to visit family.
Preceding him in death are his parents, two brothers, Earl and Rod; and an infant son, Todd.
Grateful for sharing in his life is his wife of 71 years, Ferne Olson of Beresford; son, David (Dianna) Olson of Beresford; daughter, Tammy (Mike) Hiller of Key Largo, FL; four grandchildren, Tonya (Kyle) Hansen, Ryan (Amber) Olson, Brendan Hiller and Emily Hiller; four great-grandchildren, Caroline, Melody, Colt and Roper; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, October 2, 2020, at Scandia Lutheran Church in Centerville, SD with burial to follow at Riverview Cemetery. The church encourages wearing a mask during the service. Visitation with the family present will be 6-7:30 PM Thursday, October 1st at Wass Funeral Home in Beresford.
