Obituary

Debra (Deb) Ann Fahlberg was born January 2, 1955 in Sexsmith, Alberta, Canada to Donald I. and Esther F. (Willems) Hanson. She died October 3, 2015 at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, SD at the age of 60 years. When she was a small girl, Deb's family moved to Mt. Vernon, SD whereas the pastor's kid she was raised and attended school, quickly dropping her Canadian language in order to fit in. As a teenager Deb's education continued when her family moved to Beresford, SD where she graduated in 1973. Open-hole flute and piano skills were important to the school band and chorus accompaniment and worship at Nazareth Danish Lutheran, her father's church in Beresford. Debra graduated from Augustana College in Sioux Falls in 1977 with her teaching degree and began as an Elementary Special Education teacher in St. George, SC while Fred completed US Navy service. Debra married Fred Fahlberg in Beresford, SD on July 21, 1978. They lived on the east coast where she taught at West Rowan Senior High School, Mt. Ulla, NC and continued taking piano lessons before moving to Beresford. Deb taught the Resource Room at Beresford High School while also becoming a farm wife. She stopped teaching when she and Fred adopted their two children, Nick and Lauren. Along with Christian home schooling for her children, Deb enjoyed helping Fred on their farm. Her teaching duties continued with Beresford Community Education where she helped students with the General Educational Development tests. Deb's faith in Christ as her sure hope of salvation also found expression with service in Brooklyn EFC as an officer, and in Sunday school and AWANA teaching. She enjoyed recalling her elation when, at age 5, her younger brother, Mark, was adopted as an infant. She will be remembered for her love of going on long walks, playing the piano and writing letters. More recently, Debra liked to watch movies and TV series on Netflix. Grateful to God for having shared her life is her husband, Fred Fahlberg of Beresford; son, Nick of Beresford; daughter, Lauren of Watertown; and her granddaughter, Paityn Maye. Also surviving is her mother, Esther Hanson of Sioux Falls; brother, Mark (Debbie) Hanson of Lumberton, TX; mother-in-law, Maye Fahlberg of Beresford; several nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Her father, Rev. Donald Hanson; her father-in-law, Deane Fahlberg; and niece, Molly Sue McGehee, preceded her in death. Funeral services will be 10AM Saturday, October 10, 2015 at Brooklyn Evangelical Free Church in Beresford. Visitation will be 4-8PM Friday at the church with the family present from 6-8PM and a prayer service at 7PM.
