David Wayne Thompson was born November 12, 1953 to Stanley and Ruth (Tellefson) Thompson in Sandwich, Illinois. He passed away March 25, 2026 at his home near Beresford, South Dakota after a battle with cancer.
David grew up in Newark, IL where he graduated in 1971. He was a farm kid from the beginning; a hobby collector of antique gas engines, restoring tractors and tinkering on all things.
He married the love of his life, Peggy Cummings, on September 24, 1977. Aside from farming with his dad, Dave drove dump trucks, operated cranes for various businesses in Illinois. In November of 1991 he moved his wife and two children to Beresford. Dave worked for Sebern Construction in Beresford, Crane Rental & Rigging in Sioux Falls and LandMarc Construction in Hawarden, IA. He was no stranger to working long days to provide for his family that he loved dearly. Dave worked hard and he played hard!
During retirement he and Peggy spent many hours together fishing, camping, attending gas engine shows and watching their grandchildren’s sporting events. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye and Chicago Bears fan.
Grateful for sharing in his life is his wife of 48 years, Peggy of Beresford; son, Jared Thompson of Centerville; daughter, Marcy (Todd) Spomer of Sioux Falls; six grandchildren, Haleigh (Isaac) of Brookings, Colton and his fiancé Marie of Sioux Falls; Libby of Michigan, Jace (Mell) of Sioux Falls, Kaleb and Kristian. He is also survived by two aunts, Laurie Madigan and Janeen Hoadley; uncle, Don Tellefson, sister-in-law, Becky Sagen, brother-in-law, Ed Cummings; special friends, Mike (Sue) Larson of IL, Shawn Rogers, Bill (Linda) Sebern of TX, Quentin Tellefson, Lee Carlson of Beresford; and all the friends he met throughout the years at the engine shows. Dave is preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Kimberly Rogers.
Visitation will be 5-7PM Wednesday, April 1, 2026 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 101 S 5th Street, Beresford; a memorial service will follow at 7PM.
