David Kurt Lappegard was born on November 30, 1937 in Akron, IA to the parents of Tilman & Hazel Lappegard. David lived on the home farm by Alcester, SD nearly his whole life. He was baptized & confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Hudson, SD. David attended Pleasant Hill Rural School #55 from first grade through eighth grade. David then completed his high school years at Alcester High School, graduating in May of 1956. In high school, David was outstanding in football, basketball and track. David played baseball from a young age through 30 years old. It was during his sophomore year of high school that he began dating the love of his life, JoAnn Clementson. David and Joann were also were fantastic at the "jitter-bug". David and Joann were married at Trinity Lutheran Church on August 1, 1958. After high school graduation, David attended 2 years of college at Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois. He completed his bachelor degree in education at Augustana College in 1960. He then completed his master's degree from the University of South Dakota in 1969. David taught 15 years of middle school English at Axtell Park School in Sioux Falls, SD. During the next 5 years, David taught high school English at Washington High School in Sioux Falls, SD. During his summer breaks, David was a crop adjuster for Dornberger Crop Insurance. During the mid-60's, Dave and his neighbor started the Tea Steak House, which presently is still open in Tea, SD. After retiring from teaching, David managed the Multi-Peril Crop Insurance with Dornberger Insurance Company. For the last 20 years of his working career, David was the full time manager of Blakely Crop Hail Insurance in Sioux Falls, SD. Following his retirement in 2001, David demonstrated his love for life through many new ventures: gardening, golfing, baking bread; cooking, coaching youth baseball, antiquing, wine making; writing, card playing and "coffee time." David also restored a 1936 Ford Coupe from the ground up and won many trophies with this car. This car was just like the one David and JoAnn used while courting. He also enjoyed taking his grandchildren to baseball games and stopping for ice cream afterwards. David was very proud to attend his grandchildren and great-grandchildren's sporting activities (especially wrestling and baseball). David and Joann were able to travel many places including 2 trips to Norway to visit relatives. David served on the Trinity Lutheran Church Board, president of the Sons of Norway and a member of the Rural School Historical Association. David had begun a project of placing markers of rural schools in Lincoln County. David's wife, children and grandchildren were so important to him. David will be remembered for his love of baseball, "extreme" gardening, his athletic ability, his gift of story-telling, wine making and his courage in overcoming his physical challenges in his later years. He went to live at Bethesda in the summer of 2014. David, age 77, passed away on February 28, 2015 at Bethesda Nursing Home with his family by his side. David is survived by his wife; Joann; his son, Michael (Tami) Lappegard- Beresford, SD; his daughters, Stephanie Schoellerman - Beresford, SD; Shelley (Mike) Nelson - Beresford, SD; his grandchildren: Whitney Schoellerman (special friend, Derek Ventrone) - Cranston, RI; John Schoellerman-Beresford, SD; Hillary (Chad)Andrews - Beresford, SD; Erin Schoellerman - Sioux Falls, SD; Michael Lappegard, Jr. - Worthing, SD; Ryan Lappegard - Sioux Falls, SD; Cherie (Brad) Spooner - Helotes, TX; Kellie Holder - Abilene, TX; Valerie Anderson -Sioux Falls, SD; Caleb Nelson - Beresford, SD; Makayla Nelson - Beresford, SD; Savannah (Chris) Setnar - Olympia, WA ; Josh Freeman - Sioux Falls, SD; his great-grandchildren: Jacob, Zachary, Andrea, Aaron, Brendan, Rhen, Macy, Mary, Carilee, Jayden, Aiden and a new baby in November 2015. He is also survived by his 2 sisters: Donna Hannah - Elk River, MN and Gail (Wally) Shold - International Falls, MN and many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother in infancy. Funeral Services will be held 2:00 PM, Thursday, March 5, 2015 at Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Hudson, SD with burial to follow at the church cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 6PM to 8PM with a prayer service at 8PM at Wass Funeral Home in Beresford.
