Obituary

Daryl Glenn Akland was born February 17, 1963 in Canton, South Dakota to Selmer and Eleanor (Sveeggen) Akland. He died September 5, 2020 in Sioux Falls, SD at the age of 57 years from brain cancer.

He was raised on the family farm as the youngest of three children. Daryl graduated from Beresford High School and then spent a semester at Trinity Western University in British Columbia, Canada. He returned to South Dakota, eager to farm full time, as that was his true passion. Daryl married Marlene Baker on August 24, 1985 at Brooklyn Evangelical Free Church.

He farmed for his entire adult life, especially enjoying his sheep and his custom baling business. Daryl loved time with his family most of all. Some of his favorite family activities were going out to eat on Friday nights, spur of the moment late night ice cream runs, boating and water-skiing, snow skiing, playing board and card games (He never turned down a game of Seven Up), and simply going for a drive to look at the crops. Another one of his passions was traveling. He loved taking trips with Marlene and his daughters, often insisting on taking the longest route on road trips. The 2012 family vacation to Hawaii was one Daryl always especially treasured. One of his greatest joys was spending time with his grandkids, and he always aspired to be the best grandpa to them.

In 2016, Daryl was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, something that was very difficult for the family but made them treasure the moments they had together even more. It also strengthened Daryl's relationship with Jesus and made him realize the importance of his faith. He will be missed greatly by all who knew him.

Daryl is survived by his wife of 35 years, Marlene Akland; his daughters, Marilee (Justin) Jones of Bellevue, NE, Kayla (Josh) Collins of Sioux Falls and Jessica Akland of Sioux Falls; three grandchildren, Caleb and Nora Jones and Reagan Collins; his parents, Selmer and Eleanor Akland of Beresford; brother, Donald (Heather) Akland of Silverdale, WA; sister, Marcia Matson of Yankton, brother-in-law, Gary (Thelma) Baker of Edgerton, MN; and his sisters-in-law, Hattie (Elmer) Haak of Dell Rapids, Bea (David) Sieps of Madison, Freda (Greg) Nordstrom of Sioux Falls and Marilyn (Walter) Halbleib of Baltic. He was preceded in death by his sister-in-law, Audrey Baker and brother-in-law Barry Matson.
