Curtis Owen Rist went to be with Jesus on August 16, 2013 surrounded by family and friends after a short battle with the West Nile Virus. Curt was born May 22, 1939 in Sioux Falls, SD to Hank and Oney Rist. He lived with them on a farm in Davis, SD and in Hurley, SD where he attended grade school. After his father was killed, the family moved to Centerville where he graduated from CHS in 1957. He worked in California and Texas for a short time but returned to Centerville where he met Virginia Handel. They were married on June 9, 1962 and to this union 2 sons, Todd and Terry, were born. He worked as a project engineer for the SD DOT engineering department in Beresford and Sioux Falls for 37 years from 1961 to 1998. Curt loved all the tech gadgets and was very skilled in many areas. He built the house that they have lived in since 1965. He also loved retirement, camping, making friends, and spending many winters in south Texas. He dearly loved his boys, two beautiful granddaughters, and his "grand dog" Oliver. Curt is survived by his loving wife, Virginia; sons Todd Rist of Centerville and Terry (Laura) Rist of Sioux Falls; granddaughters Shalee (Preston) Stevens of Centerville and Chelsey Rist of Sioux Falls; sister, Glenda (Jim) Carlson of Centerville; brother, Randal Rist of Brandon; brother-in-law, Kenny (Corrine) Handel of Freeman; sister-in-law, Patsy Handel of St. Charles, MO; very special friends, Larry (Barb) Jacobson of Tea, SD, Fred (Stephanie) Bowman of Fredericktown, MO, and Virgil (Mary) Camper of IL; plus many nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents. Funeral services will be 10AM Wed. Aug. 21st at Scandia Lutheran Church in Centerville. Visitation is 2-8PM Tues. in the church fellowship hall with the family present from 3-7PM and a prayer service at 7PM.
