Curtis Austin was born June 13, 1924 on the family farm in rural Turner County, South Dakota to Oscar and Nellie (Erickson) Austin. He died January 30, 2019 at the Centerville Care & Rehab Center at the age of 94 years, seven months and 17 days.
Curtis was raised on the farm with his sister, Mildred, and attended country school before going to Centerville High School. He began farming at an early age when he moved from Turner County to Clay County in 1941. Curtis met his future bride, Mavis Ende, while roller skating at the Broadway Ballroom in Centerville. They married on June 22, 1948 in Slayton, MN. Together they raised their three children, Chris, Carol and Clair, and a foster son, Roger.
He was a lifelong farmer who enjoyed buying and selling cattle and hogs. Curtis lived on his same farm until 1993 when he and Mavis moved into Beresford. For many years they had a cabin on Ottertail Lake in Minnesota where family and friends played and relaxed. Curtis loved boating and pulling the kids and grandkids on water skis. He enjoyed to eat catfish, lutefisk and a good steak. He and Mavis liked traveling to both coasts and Hawaii.
Survivors include his daughter, Carol (Rick) Johnson of Volin, SD; two sons, Chris (Nella) Austin of Bloomington, MN and Clair Austin of Beresford; foster son, Roger (Sharon) Bursell of Sioux Falls; eight grandchildren, Alex (Elizabeth) Davydov, Amanda Johnson, Alicia Johnson, Brittany Johnson, Joseph Johnson, Daniel Austin, Michael Austin and Aaron Austin; and his great-granddaughter, Kirra Johnson. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Mavis, and his sister and her husband, Mildred (William) Mausbach.
Funeral services will be 1PM Saturday, February 2

at Dalesburg Lutheran Church, rural Beresford. Visitation with the family present will be 5-7PM Friday at Wass Funeral Home in Beresford.
