Obituary

Corinne Dorothy (Stephens) Heiman was born November 20, 1938 in St. Paul, Minnesota to parents Robert and Dorothy.  Corinne was welcomed into eternal life on December 12, 2017.  She died unexpectedly in her home at the age of 79.

Corinne's early years were spent in Minnesota and North Dakota.  Her family moved to Alcester when Corrinne was a teenager.  She was united in marriage to Vergene Heiman on November 7, 1954 and to this union was born 5 children: Steve, Scott, Stuart, Susan and Rob.  Vergene and Corinne farmed in the Alcester area for over 30 years.  They received the Century Award from the South Dakota Department of Agriculture for operating a farm that had been in the Heiman family for over 100 years.  Corinne truly found joy in making a home for her family.  She was a wonderful cook and enjoyed baking homemade breads and cinnamon rolls each Saturday.  Corinne was also the backbone of the farming operation and kept things running at home, including gardening, canning, delivering numerous meals to the field, and doing chores when needed.  She loved the peace and tranquility of farm life.  After they retired from farming, they managed motels in Oklahoma, Texas and South Dakota.  She briefly worked at Schweisers and greatly enjoyed her time there, mostly for the benefits of clothing her grandchildren with beautiful dresses and outfits.  Corinne later worked as the Housekeeping Supervisor for the Morningside Manor nursing home in Alcester.  She loved helping the residents and treated them as family.

Corinne enjoyed dancing and playing cards with friends and family.  She was affectionately known as the Queen of African Rummy.  Corinne also dearly loved animals, especially her beloved American Eskimo dogs and doted on her most recent companions Bear and Rudy.  She was fond of the barn cats and made sure each one was named and accounted for.  She was an avid reader and the local librarians quickly became familiar with her favorite types of novels.  She enjoyed camping and traveling and talked fondly about her trip to Boston, New York City and Washington, DC.  She greatly enjoyed family vacations and quickly understood the window for these trips was between the end of bean walking season and the start of school sports.  Corinne and Vergene spent many hours remodeling the home that they lived in after leaving the family farm.  Corinne cherished her husband, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.  She spent her life making sure they were well taken care of and that they knew they were deeply loved.

Corinne is survived by her four children, Steve Heiman, Sioux Falls, SD, Stuart (Lori) Heiman, Alcester, SD, Susan (Bob) Weber, Rapid City, SD, and Rob (Tamra) Heiman, Alcester, SD; her brother Del Stephens, Denver, CO, 13 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.  Corinne was preceded in death by her husband, Vergene "Gene" Heiman, her parents, Robert and Dorothy, her beloved son Scott, and her brother Bruce Stephens.

Funeral services will be held Friday, December 15 at 2:00 p.m. at Peace Lutheran Church in Alcester, SD.  Visitation will be available in the church one hour prior to services.  Interment will be at Peace Lutheran Cemetery followed by a dessert reception in the church fellowship hall.
