Cleo G. Winquist was born September 29, 1920 in rural Union County, SD to parents John and Amelia (Hoffman) Joustra. She died November 15, 2012 at Morningside Care Center in Alcester, SD at the age of 92. Cleo grew up and attended rural schools in Iowa and South Dakota. She later began cleaning houses for a number of women from Big Springs. She married Norris Winquist on August 29, 1940. The couple lived in the Sioux City and Lawton area until 1945. They farmed in the Akron-Alcester area until 1978 when they moved into town. Cleo worked at Morningside Manor as a Physical Therapy Assistant and was an excellent homemaker, cook and housekeeper. Norris passed away in 1997. Cleo continued to live in her home until 2007 when she moved to Morningside Care Center where she has lived until the present time. Cleo was baptized at Big Springs Baptist Church in 1936 and has since been a faithful member serving in the Ladies Aid, Church Choir and as a G.M.G. Leader. She was also a member of the Morningside Manor Auxiliary. She enjoyed baking, gardening, raising chickens and crocheting. She and Norris liked to camp and made many trips to the Black Hills and Yankton. Cleo was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother and cherished spending time with her family. She will be missed! She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, step-mothers, Viola Blomberg Joustra and Gertrude Wiekamp Joustra and 2 brothers, Clifford and Delbert Joustra. Survivors are her two daughters, Lynda Johnson and husband Harlow of Alcester and Cindy Gates and husband Sam of Sergeant Bluff, IA; 5 grandchildren Jason (Stacy) Johnson, Alcester, Hayley (Brian) VandenBrink, Sioux Falls, Mindy (Jeff) Veltkamp, Sioux Falls, John (Sarah) Gates, Beresford and Kyle (Ruby) Gates of Moville, IA; 5 great grandchildren, Brodie and Taya VandenBrink, James and Noah Gates and Ian Gates; a half brother Jack (Kenna) Joustra, Sheridan, MI; 3 half sisters, Arlene Waddell, Council Bluffs, IA, Jerrine (Bill) Keech, Hastings, MI and Jeanita (Jim) Randall, Battle Creek, MI; two sisters-in-law Lois Winquist, LeMars, IA and Marcie (Curly) Joustra, Whttier, CA; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 2:00PM, Monday, November 19, 2012 at Big Springs Baptist Church, rural Alcester. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church.
