Funeral services for Clarence Tubby Carlson will be 10AM Tuesday, June 1, 2010 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Beresford, SD. Visitation will be Monday from 2-8PM at the church with the family present from 6-8PM and a prayer service at 7PM. Tubby died with his family by his side May 28, 2010 at Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls at the age of 76 years, nine months and 18 days. He fought a courageous 4 1/2 year battle with lung cancer.
Tubby was born August 10, 1933 in Oakland, NE to Abe and Pauline (Meyer) Carlson. He graduated from Central High School in Sioux City, IA in 1951. On October 4, 1952 he married Lucille Swisher in Elk Point, SD. They moved to Beresford in 1956 where Tubby started Carlsons Body Shop, which is now being operated by his son, Mike and grandson, Daniel. Tubby also owned and operated Foodland grocery store, currently Fiesta Foods, for 30 years with his son, Chuck.
Tubby was a gifted musician. He played with Eddie Geffre, the Misfits and in a duet with Ed Westberg for 40 years; they played at the Elks Club in Sioux Falls many years. He was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church serving as secretary and council president, a 30 year member of the Beresford Fire Department and Ambulance and he was a 15 year member of the Beresford City Council. Tubby liked golfing, fishing and wintering in Texas. The Minnesota Vikings and the Twins were his favorite teams and he enjoyed many weekends at Lake Poinsett with his family.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Lucy Carlson; two sons, Chuck (Cindy) of Lake Poinsett, SD and Michael (Kelli) of Beresford; daughter, Susan Carlson of Omaha, NE; six grandchildren, Andy Carlson of Beresford, Lindsay (Josh) Winquist of Alcester, Sarah Carlson and fianc Kyle Reppe of Worthing, Joel Carlson, Daniel Carlson and special friend Katie Atkins, Seth Carlson and Courtney Carlson all of Beresford; three great-grandchildren, Alex, Caden and Emily Winquist; sister, Patricia Holmes of Des Moines, IA and numerous nephews and nieces.
His parents; infant daughter, Suzanne; two half brothers, Ralph and Jesse; and half sister, Dorothy preceded him in death.
