Cheryl Oster was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, and friend. Cheryl was at home surrounded by her loving family when she went to meet her Savior, Jesus late on Wednesday night.
Cheryl Ann Oakland was born to Eunice (Sunde) and Vandal Oakland on June 25, 1946, in Viborg, South Dakota. Cheryl's home was just outside of Centerville, South Dakota. She graduated from Centerville High School in 1964 before attending Augustana College. At Augustana, she would reconnect with Chuck Oster, marrying him shortly thereafter at Scandia Lutheran Church, the same church where she was baptized and confirmed.
Together, Cheryl and Chuck have 3 children, 7 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren, having planted significant community roots in Owatonna, Minnesota; Burlington, Iowa; and Fort Collins & Loveland Colorado, before returning home to Centerville in 2003. They developed deep, lifelong friendships along the way. This June will mark 55 years since they were married.
Cheryl was always involved in the community, particularly in the church, where she served as office secretary until January of this year. She loved music and cherished time with her family, particularly her treasured grandchildren and great grandchildren. Cheryl was known for her steadfast commitment to preserve family, community, and church history. Cheryl loved reading, crossword puzzles, music and entertaining. Cheryl was always passionate about hosting family and friends, while making guests feel welcomed and accommodated.
If Cheryl was not planning a family reunion or researching family history, you would likely find her playing the family's favorite card game, "Rook" with her family and/or lifelong friends. Her grandchildren would excitedly anticipate their annual visit to the farm each summer where they would all learn to drive automobiles and golfcarts, play a multitude of games, and enjoyed tasty treats prepared by Grandma.
Cheryl is preceded in death by her parents, Eunice and Vandal Oakland and brother-in-law, Tom Onken. She is survived by her sisters, Paulette Onken, Sioux Falls, SD and Nancy (Lance) Brekke, Baltic, SD; sister/brother-in-law Carine (Gail) Sperlich, Parkston, SD; her husband, Chuck and three children, Christen (Tom) Cunningham, of Centerville, SD, Chad (Jennifer) Oster of Fort Collins, CO and Charles (Farah) Oster of Loveland, CO.
