Obituary

Charles Allen Norling (92) passed away at his home on June 19, 2024.  He was born at the home place west of Beresford, Clay County SD to parents Arthur and Amy (Berquist) Norling on April 22, 1932.  He received his elementary education at Glenwood Country School and then began farming with his father and brothers.

Charles was drafted into the United States Army on September 16, 1952.  He fought in the Korean War front lines, was wounded and was awarded the Purple Heart Medal.  He was honorably discharged on June 15, 1954.  Upon returning home he again became actively engaged in farming, raising livestock and doing custom farm work.

On June 23, 1958 he married Lois Zweifel and to this union six children were born; Marlin, Tom, Sue, Jeff, Patty and Lyle.   They have lived on their homestead in Lincoln County for 65 years.

After retiring from farming in 1989 he worked for Dale Kennedy as a farmhand.  He also worked for the Brooklyn Township grading roads and plowing snow in the winter for 18 years retiring again at age 85.  In 2017 Charles and Lois went to Washington, DC on the honor flight.

Charles played baseball, and bowled on the men's and mixed doubles leagues for many years.  He was a regular at Burger King and Truck Towne men's coffee group.  Charles was a St. Louis Cardinals and Minnesota Twins fan, as well as cheering on the Chiefs and Vikings football team. He also enjoyed watching pro golfing on TV.

He was a quiet man with few words, but had a really quick wit.  He was a family man who loved his family immensely, and gatherings that included a good "hot dog".
