Caroline Howard, age 86, of Centerville, SD died Feb. 17, 2008 at the Centerville Good Samaritan Center. Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 21, 2008 at Beresford Zion United Methodist Church. Visitation will be Wednesday from 2:00-8:00 p.m. at Wass Funeral Home in Beresford with the family present from 6:00-8:00 p.m. and a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. Caroline Genevieve Hardy Howard was born July 23, 1921 in Timber Lake, SD to Herbert and Grace (Whitlow) Hardy. The family then moved to Mitchell, SD where Caroline attended grade school. Later the family moved to Woodlawn farm North of Beresford. Caroline graduated from Canton High School in 1939, and attended Iowa State College in Ames, Iowa, graduating in 1943 with a degree in dietetics. Caroline joined the US Army Medical Corps in 1943, as a dietician and was later commissioned as a 2nd Lt. While serving in Calcutta, India, she met and married James S. Howard. Following their honorable discharge from the army, they spent a short time in St. Louis, Missouri, before moving to South Dakota to begin farming. After a few years on the farm, Caroline joined the staff of McKennan Hospital as a dietician. She then worked at Sioux Valley Hospital for 26 years, and retired in 1986. Caroline was an expert seamstress, and excelled at knitting and quilting. Her family enjoy many of her fine quilts made for them over the years. She was an avid reader and computer user. Caroline loved the farm and continued living on the farm and running the business after the death of her husband in 1991. She was active in United Methodist Women, Progressive Extension Club, and Birthday Club. She was a member of Gamma Phi Beta sorority for more than 60 years. Caroline is survived by two sons, Robert Howard (Judith), Centerville, SD, and Richard Howard (Lois), Sioux Falls, SD, and three grandchildren, Ryan, Christine and Thomas (Katie) and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, James, one brother, Scott Hardy, and two sisters, Lois Bogue and Sylvia Trewin.
