Obituary

Elaine "Blondie" Dunlap, 74, died Monday, June 27, 2022 at her home in Centerville, SD.  Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM, Tuesday, July 5 at Scandia Lutheran Church in Centerville, SD.  Visitation will be held from 11:00AM-1:00PM, Monday, July 4 at the church with a prayer service beginning at 1:00 PM.

Blondie was born in Vermilion South Dakota to James K. Johnson and Addie S. Snoozy on December 10 th , 1947. She grew up in Centerville, South Dakota attending both grade school and Centerville High School.  Blondie attended Stewart School of Hairdressing, graduating with honors.  After Beauty School, she moved to Omaha, NE, where she worked and met David Velasquez.  She went to California and worked there for seven months.  She then returned home and married Dave on October 17, 1970, and to this union two boys were born: David A. James Velasquez, and Derek Anthony Velasquez. They were married for 12 years.

Blondie started Blondie's House of Beauty in Centerville in 1970 and retired in February of 2021. Her last haircut was Don Miller of Centerville. In 1983 she met the love of her life, Bill Dunlap. He finally convinced her to marry him on May 24th of 1986, in Las Vegas, NV! Through this union Blondie's two sons, AJ and Derek and Bill's two daughters, Leslie and Paula were joined as a family.

The trips to Duluth, MN and Dubuque, IA are some of her favorite memories. Blondie loved to cook, especially Goulash which was the favorite dish of her grandchildren, especially her little redhead's! She also enjoyed making brownies and chocolate cake. Entertaining her family and especially spending time with Bill, putting up as many Christmas trees as she could, listening to TV and movie programs were some of her favorite things. Everyone knew not to call or come over during her favorite soap opera, General Hospital! (God even had to wait!)

Blondie felt very connected to Scandia Lutheran Church, being both baptized, confirmed, and attending Sunday School. This is where she married her first husband, and both boys were baptized here as well. Blondie hardly ever missed a service until losing her dad. Blondie was the biological mother to two children, and she loved and was considered a mom to countless others. She loved Keith and Janine Ellis and Haley and Wiley as her family as well, (she considered Keith her third son.)

Blondie is survived by her beloved husband William (Bill) Dunlap; her two sons, AJ Velasquez (and his fiancé, LeAnne) and Derek Velasquez; daughter-in-law, Kara Velasquez; her grandchildren: Ciara, Drew, Ali, Austin and Ryan; her bonus children, Leslie and Bill Smoot and Paula and Bill Breese; more special grandchildren, Cody, Casey, Alyssa and Zach; and a special friend Bill Jenter.

Blondie is preceded in death by her parents, James and Addie Johnson; sister, Lorraine McGuire; as well as several aunts and uncles.
