Betty Cooper was born March 10, 1926 in George, IA to parents Percivald and Hazel (Moats) Montgomery. She died May 23, 2014 at Bethesda Nursing Home in Beresford, SD at the age of 88 years, 2 months and 13 days. Betty graduated from Sioux Falls Washington High School and then received her teaching degree from Augustana College. She married Byron Cooper in November of 1947 in Luverne, MN . The couple resided in California until moving back to Alcester, SD. Betty taught rural school for 15 years, was the Activity Director at Morningside Manor, operated an in home daycare, and was a bookkeeper at Livestock Concepts for 18 years. Byron passed away in 1977 and Betty continued to live in Alcester until the present time. Betty was currently a member of Nathanael Lutheran Church where she was part of a group that made prayer shawls. She enjoyed playing dominos with friends, knitting, crocheting, embroidery, and collecting porcelain dolls. She loved to travel and made numerous trips to Germany, went on cruises and visited many places in the United States. She was preceded in death by her parents, grandson Kristian von Kampen, and her brothers and sisters. She is survived by her three daughters, Becky (Marion) Rus, Rock Valley, IA, Belinda (Rick) Fink, Harrisburg, SD and Barb (Dieter) von Kampen, Spring Hill, FL; four grandchildren, Koln Fink, Kiley Fink, Kori Fink and Kevin von Kampen; a special niece Susan Ericson of Mission, TX; and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM, Tuesday, May 27 at Nathanael Lutheran Church in Alcester with burial to follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, rural Alcester. Visitation will be Monday from 5PM to 7PM at Wass Funeral Home in Alcester.
