Obituary

Bernice Edith Yager Odland was born June 2, 1920 to Edward and Wilhelmina Minnie (Rist) Yager in Turner County, SD. She was baptized July 11, 1920 and confirmed August 5, 1934 at Grace Lutheran Church. She graduated from Centerville High School in 1938. Bernice went to California and worked for a short time and then returned home to help her father raise her three younger siblings.

She married Noble Odland on April 16, 1943. Three children were born to this union, Nancy, Marsha and Mark. They farmed north of town their whole life. She was very active in her church where she served many offices in Ladies Aid and taught Sunday school. Bernice was secretary for Aid Association for Lutherans for 35 years. She is a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She was a member for many years in The Modern Homemakers Club.

Noble died in 1989 and in early 1990 Bernice moved to Centerville. She enjoyed the Golden Girls Club playing cards and dining out on Saturday nights. She served on the Good Samaritan Advisory Board. Bernice enjoyed her flowers and yard, making quilts and was always trying new recipes. She always had cookies in her cookie jar for guests. Bernice enjoyed family gatherings and sitting with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In latter years her eyesight deprived her of the things she enjoyed. In January of 2002 she moved into the assisted living at Good Samaritan Center in Centerville and continued to live there until her death.

She is survived by her three children, Nancy (Curtis) Kludt of Centerville, Marsha (John) Kritzmire of Sioux Falls and Mark (Ella) Odland of Centerville; seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, three step great-grandsons, sister, Alice Sands at Good Samaritan Center in Centerville and a brother-in-law, Howard Scott of Mesa, AZ. She was preceded in death by her husband Noble, sister, Audrey, brother, Eldon, sister-in-law, Sue and brother-in-law, Jack.

Funeral services for Bernice will be 10AM Monday Sept. 20, 2010 at First English Lutheran Church in Centerville, SD. Visitation will be Sunday at Wass Funeral Home in Centerville with the family present from 5-8PM and a prayer service at 7:30PM.
