Bernard John Hendricks was born June 30, 1918 in Union County, SD to parents John and Thresa (Hartman) Hendricks. He died December 26, 2011 at Morningside Care Center in Alcester, SD at the age of 93 years, five months and 26 days. Bernard was raised and attended school in Chatsworth, Iowa and he was confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Akron, IA. He worked for area farmers following his education. Bernard married Laura Alice Webb April 13, 1941. The couple lived in Chatsworth, IA and Mitchell, SD before moving to a farm near Alcester. They were members of Union Creek Lutheran church for several years, and in 1960 they moved into Alcester and became members of Nathanael Lutheran Church. Bernard worked at the grain elevator before working for Paul Hebert grinding feed and later had his own mobile feed grinding business. He also worked as a maintenance engineer for the Townhouse Apartments in Alcester until his retirement at age 77. Bernard was known as "Mr. Fix It" in the family. He could fix anything from bicycles, to home appliances and vehicles. He loved to go fishing and kept the squirrel population happy with his squirrel feeder. Laura died March 26, 2002 and Bernard entered the Morningside Care Center in 2007. Bernard, aka "Ben" at the Morningside Care Center, loved to visit and made many new friends including his table buddy, Chick Scott. Even though he loved all the activities at the care center, he especially enjoyed the rodeo in Sioux City and a fishing trip to Yankton. Bernard was preceded in death by his wife, parents, an infant sister, a sister, Eunice Hoard, son-in-law Michael Cusick, and several other nephews and nieces. Bernard is survived by his son, Gary Hendricks and wife Julie of Humbolt, IA; two daughters, Rita Cusick of Sioux Falls and Mary Hendricks and husband, Warren Wilkens of Alcester; 13 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren, eight great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends Funeral services will be 2PM Thursday, December 29, 2011 at Nathanael Lutheran Church in Alcester with Rev. Kevin Jensen officiating. Burial will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Alcester. Visitation will be Wednesday, Dec. 28th from 5-8PM at the church with a prayer service at 7PM.
