IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Barbara Evelyn
Hybertson
April 2, 1933 – August 8, 2020
Barbara Evelyn Hybertson was born April 2, 1933, on the family farm near Alcester, SD, to parents Peter and Elizabeth (Korth) Leifgen, and joined our Heavenly Father, on August 8, 2020, at the age of 87 years, 4 months, and 6 days.
Barbara attended Gothland Country School, for seven years, and then attended Beresford High School where she graduated in 1952. During high school she worked for Sioux Steam Café, Green Globe Café, and Mac's Café. After graduating from high school, she attended Nettleton College for a degree in accounting, and also worked for Northwestern Bell for two years.
Barbara married Ferdinand (Ferd) Hybertson on January 16, 1954, and they made their home on a farm north of Centerville. Barbara was a very hard worker, helping Ferd on the farm, raising five children, and then also working at Tolly's Café for six years, and then Good Samaritan Nursing Home for 22 years where she did what she did best, cooking and baking.
During her married life she cooked and fed a lot of men that helped on the farm and helped moving many buildings, no one ever went hungry. When helping move buildings, she would be the flagger to watch the traffic and hold the cars and semis back on the road and at intersections, there would be this tiny lady, with her scarf on her head (protecting her hair) and flag in hand making sure nothing got past her.
Besides being an incredible cook, she was an astounding gardener. She could grow almost anything: potatoes, tomatoes, cucumbers, cabbage, lettuce, watermelon, and for all the pumpkins and gourds that she produced was amazing. Many of her friends, and all of her family were given gourds, and she decorated with them every year at the Ice Cream Social. Barbara and her good friend Helen Jensen actually started the first Ice Cream Social. She looked forward to exhibiting her gardening every summer at the Turner County Fair in Parker.
She was a member of Good Shepherd Catholic Church, a member of Catholic Daughters of America, and president of the Altar Society for many, many years, she worked at numerous funerals, and every event there was, usually serving her famous potato salad or cake. She loved helping everyone.
Barbara was a kind, good hearted, and loving person. She had a good sense of humor and a beautiful smile. She had a very strong faith with God. And family meant everything to her.
She was so very proud of all of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, she and Ferd were very faithful in and enjoyed attending all the sports events, school concerts, pageants, and dance/cheer competitions, and even travelled with family to the Bahamas to attend an event.
Barbara is survived by her children; sons, James (Carla) of Viborg, Richard (Bonnie) of Beresford, Thomas (Karla) of Sioux Falls; daughters, Sharon (Bob) Hustrulid of Beresford, and Sandra Hybertson of Harrisburg; ten grandchildren, Jared (Christe) Hybertson, Jordon Hybertson, Alyssa (Paxton) Folkerts, Preston Hustrulid, Lindsey Hybertson, Nicholas Hybertson, Patrick Hybertson, Michael Hybertson, Sydney Hybertson, and Kayleigh Hybertson; and three great-grandchildren, Hogan, Hadisyn, and Henley Hybertson, her brothers; Arthur Leifgen of Beresford, Ralph Leifgen of Marshall, MN, and Mike (Karen) Leifgen of Brookings, several cousins, and extended family, and also her family in Germany. She was preceded in death by her husband Ferd, her parents, her sister Lucille, and brother Vincent.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10AM Thursday, August 13, 2020 at Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Centerville, SD. Burial will follow at St. John Catholic Cemetery in Beresford. Visitation will be 5-7PM Wednesday with a prayer service at 7PM at the church.
