Arthur J. "Scratch" Norling was born April 28, 1929 in rural Clay County, SD to parents Arthur, Sr. and Amy (Berquist) Norling. He died November 16, 2012 at Bethesda Nursing Home in Beresford, SD at 83 years of age. Scratch attended Glenwood rural school. He then began his lifelong career as a farmer. He married Arlys Haugen on January 7, 1961 at Our Saviors Lutheran Chapel in Sioux Falls. The couple farmed in the Beresford area until Scratch retired in 1995. He moved into Bethesda in 2010 and has resided there until the present time. Scratch was baptized, confirmed and was a member at Emmanuel Lutheran Church where he had served on the property committee. He also served on the Glenwood Township and School Boards and was on the board of directors for First National and later First Savings Bank. Scratch loved to play golf, bowl, be outdoors, and spend time with his family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers, Milo and Richard, and 3 sisters, Norma Norling, Donna LaFurge, and Betty Volden. He is survived by his wife Arlys of Beresford; daughter Sandy Luttrell and husband Jim of Scottsdale, AZ; two sons, Doug Norling and wife Michele of Centerville and Larry Norling and wife Darla of Beresford; 7 grandchildren; 4 step-great grandchildren; two brothers, Charles Norling and wife Lois of Beresford and John Norling of Sioux Falls; sister Joy Close and her husband Bill of Phoenix, AZ; and many other relatives and friends. Memorial services will be held 10:00 AM, Monday, November 19 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Beresford. A memorial visitation will be Sunday from 5Pm to 7PM at Wass Funeral Home in Beresford.
