Arlan Thomas Ostrem was born March 19, 1922 in Wakonda, South Dakota to Ben and Carrie (Knutson) Ostrem. He died August 3, 2014 at Bethesda of Beresford at the age of 92 years, four months and 14 days. He was raised in the Wakonda area, attending Ireland country school and graduating from Wakonda High School. Arlan accepted the Lord in 1939 at Scandia Lutheran Church in Centerville. He married LeRena Johnson on May 29, 1943 in rural Beresford. Together they raised their three children, Donald, Lynda and Terry. Arlan engaged in farming his whole life until retiring in 1992. He enjoyed singing with LeRena for many occasions, being a teacher and superintendent for Wakonda Lutheran Church Sunday School, serving on church boards and assisting with Awana at Brooklyn Church. Once retired, he recycled scrap iron and spent winters in Texas with LeRena. There they shared their music with nursing home residents and other groups. His survivors include his wife of 71 years, LeRena; children, Donald (Elaine) Ostrem of Centerville, Lynda (Curtis) Olson of Sioux Falls and Terry (Janis) Ostrem of Beresford; five grandchildren, Kari Ostrem of Centerville, Douglas (Michelle) Olson of Sioux Falls, Krista Olson (Aman Manchanda) of Boston, MA, Nicole Ostrem (Patrick Golay) of Sioux Falls and Ashley Ostrem of Beresford; nine great-grandchildren, Catherine, Christine, Michael, Brent (Devin), Talia, Damien, Naia, Camden and Kemper; and two great-great grandchildren, Reegan and Ryenn. His parents, grandson, Corey Ostrem and brother, Duane Ostrem preceded him in death. Funeral services will be 10AM Thursday, August 7th at Brooklyn Evangelical Free Church in rural Beresford. Visitation will be 2-8PM Wednesday at Wass Funeral Home in Beresford with the family present from 5-7PM and a devotion at 7PM.
