Alvin August Bystrom, age 76, passed away Tuesday, September 15, 2020 at the Sanford Heart Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD.

Alvin Bystrom was born on May 10, 1944 to August and Signe (Peterson) Bystrom in Beresford, SD. He was raised on the Bystrom farm in Clay County and was baptized and confirmed in the Dalesburg Lutheran Church.

Alvin attended Dalesburg Grade School and graduated from Beresford High School in 1962. After graduation he attended Southern State College in Springfield, SD until he was drafted into the US Army. Alvin was stationed in Rhode Island when his father passed away and he received an honorable discharge to return home to take over the farming operation.

Later Alvin moved to Beresford and worked for several businesses in the area before being hired by the South Dakota Department of Transportation/Beresford Maintenance where he worked for 29 years until his retirement.

He loved gardening and was proud of his fruit trees. Alvin also had a love for cars and motorcycles. His hobbies included fishing and playing Kings Corner. He was a lifelong member of Dalesburg Lutheran Church. At Alcester Care & Rehab he enjoyed attending church services and Bible Study. He spent many weekends at his sister and brother-in-law's place farming with Lewis and his nephews. As it's said, you can take the man off the farm, but you can't take the love of the farm out of the man.

In 2014, due to failing health, Alvin moved to the Alcester Care & Rehab Center where he resided until the present time.

He is survived by his sister, Gloria Kribell of Beresford; his nephews and their spouses, Jeff (Debbie) Kribell, Brandon, SD, Jim (Connie) Kribell, Beresford, SD, Jere (Andrea) Kribell, Lennox, SD, Dan (Paula) Kribell, Bellevue, NE, Tom Kribell, Nevada, IA, and Rob (DeAnne) Kribell, Beresford, SD; his niece's spouse, Craig Caruthers, Yankton, SD; an uncle, Lloyd Peterson, and many great-nephews and nieces. Alvin was preceded in death by his parents, August and Signe Bystrom; his brother-in-law, Lewis Kribell; his niece, Kari Lynn (Kribell) Caruthers; and his great-nephew, Thomas August Kribell.

Funeral services will be 11:30AM Saturday, September 19, 2020 at Wass Funeral Home in Beresford, SD with burial to follow at Dalesburg Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. wassfuneralhome.com
