Alvern J. Buum was born September 26, 1936 in Union County, South Dakota to Lloyd and Antoinette (Swanson) Buum. He died May 13, 2026 in Sioux Falls, SD at the age of 89 years.

Alvern was raised near Spink, SD and attended country school. He proudly served in the US Air Force from 1957- 1960. Alvern returned to South Dakota and married Marcella Huebner on June 2, 1962. Alvern farmed alongside his father-in-law and rented until 1979 when he and Marcella bought their land. Alvern was a self-taught motor grader operator and cared for the township roads for many years. He was well known for his bulldozer work; making terraces, building stock ponds and razing old farmsteads.

He spent many years with Marcella and friends at a cabin in Minnesota relaxing and fishing. Alvern enjoyed hunting and loved his German Shepherd dogs. He and Marcella moved into Beresford in 2022.

His parents; one brother, Wayne (LaVonne) Buum; and his in-laws, Ralph (Rose) Huebner preceded him in death.

Alvern is survived by his wife of 63 years, Marcella; children, Angie Castillo of Denver, Michele (Mark) Radack of Tyndall, Jerry (Laurie) Buum of Beresford and Jeff (Carrie) Buum of Beresford; 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 10:30AM Sat., May 16, 2026 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Beresford followed by burial with military honors at 12:30PM at Union Creek Cemetery. Visitation will be 5-7PM Fri., May 15th at the church with a 7PM prayer service.
