Obituary

Alice Strand, age 87, died Monday, December 10, 2007, at Minnewaska Lutheran Home in Starbuck. Funeral services will be Friday, December 14th, at 11:00 AM at Solem Lutheran Church in rural Kensington, MN and a second service will be held 11AM, Monday, December 17th at Wass Funeral Home in Centerville, SD. Burial will be at the St. Peter Greenfield Cemetery, rural Vermillion, SD. Alice Ruth Ulvog was born to Daniel and Lydia (Venn) Ulvog in Centerville, SD, on July 26, 1920. She graduated from Centerville High School in 1938. On October 26, 1942, she was united in marriage to Mervin Strand in Nebraska. The couple farmed in rural Centerville until 1955 when they moved to rural Kensington, MN, where they continued to farm. In 1968 they moved to the city of Kensington, where Alice resided until 2006 when she moved to the Minnewaska Lutheran Home in Starbuck, MN. Alice was the owner and proprietor of Alice's Coffee Shop in Kensington and also worked as a cook at the school in Kensington. She worked at the Hoffman Nursing Home for over 21 years and was the nutrition site manager in Kensington. Alice was active in the American Legion Auxiliary, Solem Lutheran Church, the 50+ Club and a founding member of the Runestone Park Association. She enjoyed sewing, crafts, quilting and reading. She is survived by her children, David (Sandy) Strand of Kensington, MN, and Sonia (Vernon) Pooch of Farwell, MN; 7 grandchildren, Matthew, Mitchell, Marshall and Allison Strand, Nicholas, Vanessa and Austin Pooch, 1 great-grandchild, Ethan Neuman, 1 sister, Louise Sherrick of Iowa; 4 brothers, Carl (Dorothy) Ulvog of NM, Daniel Lloyd (Terry) Ulvog of IL, Olaf (Mavis) Ulvog of MN, and James (Betty) Ulvog of CA; 2 sisters-in-law, Dora Horton and Grace Strand, both of SD; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Alice was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Mervin (in 1972); 1 brother, Gilbert Ulvog and 1 sister, Clarice Monahan; 3 nephews and 1 niece.
