Obituary

Alice LaVaun Sands, 82, of Centerville, entered into eternal life with her Savior on Wednesday, March 18, 2015, at Centerville Care & Rehab. Alice was born on October 27, 1932, in Turner County, South Dakota, to Edward and Wilhelmina "Minnie" (Rist) Yager. Alice was the youngest of four children. She grew up on a farm in the Centerville area where she was confirmed (1946), graduated from high school (1950), and attended cosmetology school. Her siblings teased that Alice could almost always be found on horseback during any free moment. Alice was united in marriage to Hollis "Jack" Sands on March 29, 1952, in Middletown, Rhode Island. She worked in medical records and lived on numerous naval bases throughout the U.S. as her husband served all over the U.S. and abroad in the U.S. Navy. Two children were born to this union: Charles "Chuck" and James "Jimmy". Once children entered the picture, the couple moved to Sioux Falls around 1962 where Alice was a stay-at-home mom. Her children fondly remember the fresh baked bread (still warm) almost every day after school. She was a long-time member of Christ Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls where both of her children were confirmed. Alice and her husband retired in Rapid City close to family and grandchildren. Upon the death of her husband in 2004, Alice moved back to her home town in Centerville. Alice was a member of her hometown church, First English Lutheran. She is survived by two sons, Jimmy (Jodi) Sands, Piedmont and Chuck (Delora) Sands, Appleton, WI; six grandchildren, Ryan (Heather) Sands, Milwaukee, WI and Dr. Melissa (Alder) Villegas, Cincinnati, OH and Kayla Sands, Dickenson, ND and Kari Sands, Rapid City, Beau and Briah Sands, Piedmont; one great-grandchild, Blake Sands, Milwaukee, WI; and brother-in-law Howard Scott, Mesa, AZ. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother and sister-in-law Eldon (Sue) Yager, sister and brother-in-law Bernice (Noble) Odland, and sister Audrey Scott. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 21, at First English Lutheran Church in Centerville with Rev. Charles Kramer officiating. The family would like to thank the staff at Centerville Care and Rehab center for their loving care of Alice. Memorials can be given to First English Lutheran Church, 351 Broadway St., Centerville, SD, 57014
