Obituary

Alex Glen Griffith was born October 21, 2002 in Sioux City, Iowa to parents Joe and Kirsten (Allgaier) Griffith. He died November 29, 2021 in Watertown, South Dakota at the age of 19 years.

Alex was raised near Alcester and attended Alcester-Hudson School, graduating in May of this year with high honors. Like most students from a small school, Alex had a core group of friends from preschool all the way through high school. Outside of school, he would go fishing and hunting.  At school he played football (his favorite sport) and basketball, along with being in many other activities.

Alex was smart and hardworking.  He taught himself to read and write at the age of 3 yrs. Alex had a natural gift of building and creating things that started at a young age with Legos.  He developed his own creations, broke them down, and made something new.  He liked to draw and could complete puzzles in a short time.  As he grew older, he turned his interest towards mechanics.  Using his intuition and by watching online videos, he was able to get his Uncle Jim's WWII army Jeep running.  Alex had a love for older pickups and was currently working on rebuilding a 1966 Ford pickup that he spotted in a neighbor's tree grove. He broke down the motor, rebuilt it, and got it running. He was going to restore the body next.  He bought his current 1999 Ford diesel pickup and was constantly customizing it to make it his own.  He financed these projects by working at Total Stop and Moonlight Dairy.

Alex dabbled with welding at home while working on his vehicles.  It became more than a hobby and turned into his desire to become a welder.  His favorite shop teacher, Marlin Day, arranged for him to take an intern welding position at Masaba in Vermillion. His skill turned into a summer job and the company helped him get a Build Dakota scholarship. Alex was currently in the welding program at Lake Area Technical College in Watertown.  He was employed at Mack Steel as a welder/fabricator.

He is survived by his parents, Joe and Kirsten and his beloved brother, Joshua of Madison; maternal grandparents, Ken and Barb Allgaier of Dell Rapids; extended family:  Jennifer and Corwin Jones and family (Pierre), Michele and Jason Curry and family (Pierre), Nichole and Darren Berg and family (Pierre), Linda and Bob Millican and family (Wisconsin), Elva Stenbak and family (Mount Vernon, TX), John Griffith and family (Huron). Alex was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Frank and Clareen Griffith, uncle Jim Griffith, and aunt Sherry Griffith.

A service of remembrance will be held at 2:00pm Saturday, December 11, 2021 at the Alcester Hudson High School gymnasium.
