Life Legacy


Robert J. Bovill was born January 4, 1931 in Beresford, South Dakota to Robert and Rose (Voegeli) Bovill. He died January 2, 2013 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD at the age of 81 years, 11 months and 28 days.

He was raised on a farm near Beresford and graduated from Beresford High School. He farmed with his father and brother prior to joining the US Army. Robert was married May 15, 1953 to Audrey Stoneall in Sioux Falls. Following his time in the Army, they returned to the area and farmed until 1980. The couple lived in Egan, Parker and Beresford. Robert was a custodian/maintenance worker for the Parker school from 1981 to 1996.

They returned to the homestead north of Beresford and lived there where Robert enjoyed reading, woodworking and tinkering on his John Deere tractors that he drove in the Beresford parades. He and his neighbor Bill liked to go auctioning and to tractor shows. Robert loved his many pets over the years and spending time with his family. After Audrey died in December 2005 Robert continued to live in Beresford

He is survived by his son, Randy Bovill and wife Brenda of Pueblo West, CO; daughter, Debbie Ruhr and husband Byron of Watertown, SD; four grandchildren, Ryan (Danielle) Ruhr, Natasha (Tim) McCauley, Jerald Van Dyke and Connie VerHoek; eight great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Jones, Finnegan McCauley, Tom, Tim and Jason Van Dyke and Ashley, Danna and Cody VerHoek; son-in-law, Jon Hale of Phoenix; and brother, George (Phyllis) Bovill of Beresford. His parents, wife, and daughter, Julie Hale, preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be 11AM Tuesday, Jan. 8th, at Beresford Zion United Methodist Church. Visitation will be 4-8PM Monday at Wass Funeral Home in Beresford with the family present from 5-8PM.
