Life Legacy

Bruce K. “Doc” Westling was born February 23, 1948 to Harold and Carrie (Meinjohans) Westling in Hawarden, IA. He died June 5, 2013 in Alcester at the age of 65 years, three months and 12 days.

He was raised and educated in Alcester graduating from Alcester High School in 1966. Doc attended automotive technical school in Omaha then returned and worked at a paint and body shop. Doc married Ruth Knock June 4, 1983 at Inspiration Hills in Iowa. They raised their two daughters in Alcester. He worked for Del’s DX in Alcester and later opened and operated Doc’s Conoco in Alcester until 1992.

Doc was an active member of the UCC Church in Alcester and was a 36 year volunteer of the Alcester Fire Department. He enjoyed camping and fishing with his family and friends and coffee with his friends at DJ’s. In recent years, Doc liked to watch the History channel and NASCAR races on television and he was anxiously awaiting the arrival of his first granddaughter.

He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Ruth Westling of Alcester; daughters, Tena Heikes and her husband Brian of Beresford and Molly Westling of Sioux Falls; his future granddaughter; one sister, Sharon Evans and her husband Evan of Sioux Falls; mother-in-law, Inez Knock; his brothers and sisters in-law, Paul (Laurie) Knock, Roger (Sharry) Knock, Tebbo Knock, Richard (Crystal) Knock, Wally (Kathy) Knock and Ardy (Marty) Conway; five nephews, seven nieces, 16 great-nieces and nephews and one great-great-nephew. His parents and his father-in-law preceded him in death.

Funeral services for Doc will be 1PM Saturday, June 8, 2013 at the United Church of Christ in Alcester. Burial will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Alcester. Visitation with the family present will be 5-8PM Friday at the church.
